Iris Apfel is 96 and Will Never Retire

Iris Apfel is 96 and Will Never Retire Iris Apfel doesn’t own a computer, so if you want to get in contact with her, you have to pick up the phone and call. Several times. And don’t mistake that for some sort of crotchety aloofness. Apfel might be 96, but she’s not out of touch. She’s just busy. Really, really busy. Apfel is supposed to be resting, by the way. Works too hard. Doctor’s orders. “I don’t have any time to waste,” she says, speaking from her always-buzzing cell phone in Palm Beachâ€"ostensibly on a “break” from noisy New York. Apfel’s new book, Accidental Icon, hit shelves in March, and the roll out hasn’t slowed down. Now, when she isn’t working on her line of apparel, jewelry, and shoes for the Home Shopping Network (HSN), she has a book signing to run to, or a press call to hop on. This spring, she partnered with Bergdorf Goodman on a clothing pop-upâ€"a floral and feather affair, trumpeted by a brigade of Apfel-inspired mannequins in the store’s famed window displays. Next up: a collection of jewel-toned linens and tableware for the home furnishings company Grandin Road, and some porcelain jewelry for the French luxury store Bernardaud. The list goes on. She lovingly refers to herself as a “geriatric starlet” and rightfully so. Her look is like a walking kaleidoscope, or a Picasso painting, dipped in a barrel of costume jewelry. But a relentless work ethic is as much an Iris Apfel trademark as her oh-so-oversize glasses. Iris Apfel + Inc International Concepts Launch, La Sirena, New York, August 30, 2016. Shane Drummondâ€"BFA/REX/Shutterstock Apfel started her career in the 1940s as a “copy girl” at Women’s Wear Daily, a $15 a week job where her only task was to carry stacks of paper from one person’s desk to another. Shortly after, she landed a gig as an assistant to the interior designer Elinor Johnson. In 1948, she married Carl Apfel, and the two launched their own luxury fabric and design business, Old World Weavers, in 1950. The company was a massive success; nine U.S. First Ladies tapped the couple for White House interior design projects. After its sale in 1992, Apfel continued working for herself, picking up apparel, jewelry, and home furnishing commissions at what most people would consider a breakneck pace. But Apfel isn’t like most people. She stumbled into fame in her golden years and seems genuinely mystified by her late-in-life celebrity. It found her just the same: When Apfel was 85, the Metropolitan Museum of Art dedicated an entire exhibit in its costume wing to her personal apparel and jewelry collection. 2014 saw the release of Iris, a documentary from the late director Albert Maysles. And earlier this year, Apfel became the oldest person to have a Barbie doll fashioned in her likeness. After nearly 80 years in the workforce, her tenacity defies most twilight-year ideals. But as worries of an impending retirement crisis threaten to plague the workforceâ€"just 23% of baby boomers think their savings will last through retirement or that they’ve adequately prepared for it, according to a 2017 survey from the Insured Retirement Instituteâ€"Apfel’s way of life is something any worker has to think about these days. . She’s still in a league of her ownâ€"about half of Americans retire between the ages of 61 and 65, according to the Census Bureau. Studies show that the average age of retirement is rising, though, mostly owing to longer life expectancies, changes in Social Security benefits, and rising health care costs. Some people are working longer because they want toâ€"they love their job, or they like it more than a life-of-leisure alternative. And a few years shy of her 100th birthday, Apfel is their poster child. “For me, retirement is a fate worse than death,” she says. “I’ve seen so many people, especially in a place like Palm Beach, who worked so hard in their lives, and they come down here cold turkey, and then one day wake up and they realize how vacuous their lives are now. I mean it isn’t funny, I’ve seen it with my own eyes!” There are tons of photos in Accidental Iconâ€"mostly shots of Apfel, sometimes at work, huddled over antique textiles (and always in her couture best). But the most powerful images are of her and Carl together. Sepia-toned photos of the twoâ€"dancing at black-tie events, traveling in the Middle East, London, and Italy, and sifting through flea market fabricâ€"document a beautiful partnership, both inside and outside the office. After Carl died in 2015, Apfel says her work took on new meaning. “He really pushed me into this,” she says. “So I decided I wouldn’t just stay at home and cry all day. I’m working harder than I ever did in my life.” Apfel doesn’t talk about her story like it’s a hero’s journey. She insists she never had a big, life-affirming goal, or even a business plan. If you spend too much time analyzing things, she says, it “takes the juice out of it.” She always just did what interested her, and stopped when it didn’t. Sometimes, well-intentioned people tell Apfel she should try to relax a little moreâ€"maybe put her feet up, or consider living in Palm Beach full-time. Her response? “I learned a long time ago that I can’t live in somebody else’s image,” she says. “If I want to live my life my way, why shouldn’t I? I don’t give a damn. They can go peddle their papers.”

My Experience as a Navy Veteran Gave Me the Skills to Succeed in My Corporate Career

My Experience as a Navy Veteran Gave Me the Skills to Succeed in My Corporate Career As a company that lives its core values of Integrity, Innovation, and Inclusion every single day, Seagate Technology understands the tremendous value that diversity brings to the shared success of its global team. Thats why Seagate is an honored employer of choice for U.S. veterans, active military, and their family members. One such employee, Jenny Barrett, shares how herbei experience with the U.S. Navy led her to being a part of the Seagate team.As a project manager on Seagates learning and development team, how do you draw upon the skills you acquired in the U.S. Navy?My initial role in the military was to maintain the communications and navigations systems on P3-Orions, the Navys anti-submarine warfare aircraft. Over time, I transitioned into various other roles, including training program manager, career counselor, and sexual assault prevention and response advocate. I learned too many skills t o count during my time in the Navy, but a few that have been the most meaningful and have had the biggest impact on my career are learning agility, leading a diverse team, project management, flexibility, and patience.Managing learning and development programs for over 40,000 employees across the globe is no small undertaking. How do you find the time to get involved in Employee Resource Groups (ERGs), and what made you decide to become an ERG leader? One of the things that drew me to Seagate was the strong ERG presence. Community is extremely important to me--both at work and in my personal life--so I knew as soon as I joined the company that I wanted to be part of the Seagate womens ERG. There are so many talented and innovative women here, and we want to provide a safe and supportive platform for them to develop in their careers and get to know one another. As a learning and development professional, my role as an ERG leader is right in my wheelhouse It gives me the opportunity to create and deliver training that Im passionate about, collaborate with cross-functional colleagues, and help others grow and develop both personally and professionally. Its clear the skills you learned from the U.S. Navy helped to prepare you for success at Seagate, and that youve found Seagate to be a positive, inclusive, and engaging environment. What advice do you have for other women in the military looking to transition into a corporate career?Dont limit your vision of what you can do in a corporate environment based on what you did in the military. Your skills are transferable to every facet of business, and are greatly valued by employers. Also, take advantage of every opportunity that comes your way, both in the military and in your corporate job. Youll build a network, learn new skills, and open yourself up to opportunities you may never have discovered otherwise.A shared focus on building a culture of inclusion is part of what makes Seagate such a great place to be and wor k. How would you describe Seagates culture, and how do you think ERGs support this?Seagate is doing so many great things to support a culture of inclusion, from offering unconscious bias education to empowering ERGs. The ERGs support this culture by providing an environment in which all employees feel safe to show up as their best selves. In my experience, people are much more likely to be engaged at work if they feel like they are part of a community and are appreciated for the gifts and talents they bring to the table. By bringing people from all levels and areas of the business together, ERGs foster a sense of community across the company.--Fairygodboss is proud to partner with Seagate.

Why Equal Pay for Women Would Benefit the US Economy

Why Equal Pay for Women Would Benefit the US EconomyWhy Equal Pay for Women Would Benefit the US EconomyOn average, women do not receive equal pay for doing the same jobs men do. Not only should women receive fair pay because they deserve it, but because it would be good for the U.S. economy.Consider this 42percent of women are their families sole or primary source of income and women contribute 43 percent of the gross national product. Women Spend More Money Than Men, Thereby Sustaining the Economy According to a study in part conducted by WomenCertified, a womens consumer advocacy and retail training organization, women spend $4 trillion annually, accounting for 83 percentof all U.S. Consumer spending or, an astounding two-thirds of the nations gross national product. Some say those figures are even higher. According to the most recent figures fasson Nielsen Consumer, the collective power of a womans wallet range from $5 trillion to $15 trillion spent annually. In fact, accord ing to recent figures, women buy over 50 percent of goods that some might consider mens products, such as video games and other electronics, cars, and tools for DIY home and garden. Kids video game obsession isnt really about the games

Kids video game obsession isnt really about the gamesKids video game obsession isnt really about the gamesMany parents are concerned with their childs seemingly obsessive video game play.Fortnite, the most recent gaming phenomenon, has taken the world by storm and has parents asking whether the shooter game is okay for kids. The short answer isyes,Fortnite is generally fine.Furthermore, parents can breathe easier knowing that research suggests gaming (on its own) doesnotcause disorders like addiction. However, theres more to the story. A comprehensive answer to the question of whether video games are harmful must take into account other factors. Fortnite is just the latest example of a pastimesomekids spend more time on than is good for them. But parents need to understandwhykids play as well as when to worry and when to relax.Addiction, really? The word addiction gets tossed around quite a bit these days. Its not uncommon to hear people say that they are addicted to chocolate orshoe sh opping, but if it isnt causing serious harm and impairment to daily function, it isnt an addiction. Its an overindulgence. This isnt just semantics. An addiction involves a lack of control despite adverse consequences. Parents may worry their kids are addicted, but if the child can pull themselves away from a game to join the family for a conversation over dinner, and shows interest in other activities, like sports or socializing with friends, thenthey are not addicted.Generally, parents panic when their kids video game playing comes at the expense of doing other things like studying or helping around the house. But lets be honest, kids have been avoiding these activities for ages. Equally true is the fact parents have been complaining about their unhelpful children well before the first video game was plugged into its socket. In fact, moderatevideo gameplay has been shown to be beneficial.A study conductedat Oxford by Dr. Andrew Przybylski revealed playing about one hur per day enhan ced psychological well-being, while when taken to an extreme, playing over three hours per day, was correlated with less well-being.The real question should be what is it about the special draw of gaming that makes it the preferred pastime of so many millions of kids? What makes it so difficult for even non-addicted kids to step away from video games sometimes? The answer has to do with the way games address basic psychological needs. What kids are looking for (and not getting)Fortnite, like any well-designed video game, satisfies what we are all looking for. According to Drs. Edward Deci and Richard Ryan, people need three things to flourish. We look for competence - the need for mastery, progression, achievement, and growth. We need autonomy - the need for volition and freedom of control over our choice. And finally, we strive for relatedness - the need to feel like we matter to others and that others matter to us. Unfortunately, when considering the state of modern childhood, ma ny kids arent getting enough of these three essential elements.School, where kids spend most of their waking hours, is in many ways the antithesis of a place where kids feel competence, autonomy, and relatedness. There, kids are told what to do, where to be, what to think, what to wear, and what to eat. Alarms and bells orchestrate their movements with farm-chattel precision while teachers opine on topics students could care less about. If theyre bored and want to go, theyre punished. If they want to learn something else, theyre told to be quiet. If theyd like to go deeper on a topic, theyre prodded to stay on track. Of course, this isnt every students experience and different countries, schools, and teachers use different approaches to educate kids. But while some argue discipline and control providestructure, its clear why teachers and students might struggle with motivation in the classroom.Gamers feel competence when they practice strengths to achieve their aims. In a game, play ers have the autonomy to call the shots, do what they want, and experiment with creative strategies to solve problems. Games are also social outlets where players can feel relatedness. In Fortnite, for example, players often meet in the virtual environment to chat and socialize because doing so in the real world is often inconvenient or off limits. Whereas previous generations were allowed to simply play after school and form close social bonds, many kids today are raised by fearful and overworked parents who insist their kids either attend a regimented afterschool program or stay behind lock and key at home.We shouldnt be surprised when the confinement kids find themselves in today often yields behaviors we dont understand and dont like. Games satisfy psychological needs other areas of life are not satiating.Of course, none of this is to say video games are a good substitution - quite the opposite. While a well-designed game attempts to satisfythese needs, it cant come close to th e deep satisfaction real life and real menschenfreundlich connection can provide. No game can give a child the feeling of competence that comes from accomplishing a difficult task or learning a new skill on their own accord. Fortnite cant compete with the exhilaration that comes from the autonomy of exploring reality, where a child is free to ask questions and unlock mysteries in the real world. No social media site can give a kid the sense of relatedness, safety, and warmth that comes from an adult who loves that child unconditionally just the way they are, no matter what, and takes the time to tell them so.Some kids suffer from gaming disorders, but such dependencies are often coupled with pre-existing conditions including problems with impulse control. This, of course, does not abdicate companies from their moral responsibility to help problem gamers. Its time theyimplement policiesto identify and help those with disorders. For most children, however, parents understanding the deep er truth behind what kids are getting out of games empowers them to take steps to give kids more of what they need. It also helps parents get into a state of mind to talk rationally about overuse instead of succumbing to the hysterics and moral panic that our parents used to try and force us to stop listening to rock n roll, watching MTV, playing pinball, or reading comic books. Video games are this generations outlet and some kids use them as a tool to escape the same way some of us use our own flavor of dissociative devices to tune out reality for a while.Instead of repeating the mistakes of previous generations with heavy-handed tactics, lets understand the psychological source of the problem. Ultimately, parents goal should be to help kids learn strategies for coping with overuse on their own so that they do whats good for them even when were not around. By teaching self-regulating habits, promoting intentional gaming, and helping kids find suitable alternatives, parents can hel p kids find what they are really looking for.Be vulnerable and give-up some controlAs studies show, theres nothing wrong with a moderate amount of gameplay. Looking out for symptoms of excessive use, while opening a dialogue about how much is too much, can empower kids to take control of their habits for themselves. One suggestion is to make time to watch them play and try playing yourself. Become their biggest fan and let them be the expert at something. Letting them coach you through a game will give them the feeling of competency they crave while strengthening your relatedness.Be vulnerable. Show them you struggle with tech overuse at times as well. Try letting them set their own limits for how much game time is healthy and help them find ways to stick to the time limits they set for themselves instead of imposing yet more rules. If kids see parents are on their team and not just an obstacle to their needs being met, the all-too-common adversarial relationship begins to change. Whe n kids see parents are not trying to stop them from having fun, but are rather helping them keep things in perspective and in the right proportion, they become allies instead of enemies.Nirs NoteThis post was co-authored byAndrew Kinch and Nir Eyal.
